CHAPTER ELEVEN

“So I take it you found something?” my dad asked, trying to hide the excitement in his voice.

“First, I noticed the security camera-” I said, preparing to go down the list of things I found, but I was interrupted by my father.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

“So I take it you found something?” my dad asked, trying to hide the excitement in his voice.

“First, I noticed the security camera-” I said, preparing to go down the list of things I found, but I was interrupted by my father.

“Yeah, but the video has been taken out of tape player it’s hooked up to.” he reluctantly informed me.

“I figured as much.” I explained, “If there had been video of the murder then they would’ve used that evidence against him.”

“But how does a video camera without the actual video help us?”

“The way I understand Todd’s version of the story, he dressed up in a ski mask and wore gloves. Why would he bother taking the video tape out of the player?”

“I don’t know if a jury would buy that. The prosecutors could come up with a number of reasons why he would need to take the tape with him.”

I thought of that too, but I figured it was still worth mentioning because it was something that seemed to conflict with the police’s story. Fortunately that wasn’t the only thing I found.

“There’s also the wrench. In the picture you can see blood dried towards one end, but then some of it was noticeably smeared on the other. So I figured whoever used the wrench to kill the owner had wiped away his fingerprints and that’s where the blood smear comes from.” I noticed. “But then if Todd was wearing gloves, why would he need to wipe away his fingerprints?”

“The prosecutor could just claim he wasn’t wearing gloves when he robbed the store. There is no evidence suggesting that he did.”

“It would be a stretch to think he could go the whole robbery without leaving a print in the entire store. They found nothing on the door or the counter or in the office where the video player is.” I explained. “And then of course there is the whole ‘why use a wrench when he has a gun’ thing.”

It was the first thing that came to mind when I first heard that the owner had been killed with a blunt object rather than a gun. It should’ve been obvious to the detectives too, but when they first investigated the crime they probably assumed that the murder happened first and the robbery was an afterthought. Of course later on they realized it was the other way around and just forgot to recheck their assumptions.

“I thought of that as well.” he said. “That’s what I was going to go to court with, but with no other potential suspect around and the fact that he’s not exactly an upstanding citizen, I’m still finding an uphill battle unless we find something else.

“Well, I know for sure that someone else was here when the murder happened.”

“You do?”

“Yes.” I pointed to the receipts. “This receipt here says that someone purchased a few items from the store at 9:10. If Todd showed up here right before 9:10, he would’ve either seen someone leaving the store or they would’ve still been in the store when Todd was here.
