Chapter 25–TAO

Our fellow travelers took to calling Tommy “TAO,” short for The Ancient One. Reese and I were given another table to sit at in The Strike Pocket. Whenever Tommy entered the bar, new friends would be invited to sit with him. First there were Ruth and Herman with the six fingers. Then Lillian and Eddie joined him. Pretty soon everybody in the bar had a chance to talk to Tommy.

Reese and I were some of the last to sit with Tommy.

“I’ve met both of you before,” Tommy said, looking over us with his sea blue eyes.

“Yes, I’m Reese. We met at the bar the first day you walked in. And this is Margaret.”

“Hello Thomas,” I said.

“Thomas,” he laughed. “You sound like the teachers in Catholic school. I’m Tommy.”

“Tommy, nice to meet you.” I said not trusting myself to say any more. I was afraid I’d start crying.

“What do you do?” Tommy asked us.

“Both Margaret and I are research assistants. If you find yourself needing assistants in the future, we’d be glad to help you,” Reese said.

“That’s very kind of you. I’m not working on anything at the moment but I just may have need of your help in the future. I’ll keep that in mind,” Tommy said. “Now, are you interested in a game of pinball?”

“Sure. I’m not so good at it, but I’ll give it a try,” Reese said. He poked me with his elbow.

“I love pinball. I might be a bit rusty, but I’ll give it a shot,” I said.

We ordered round after round of beer. I’d drink a few sips and conveniently lose my drink. Reese did a better job of keeping up. I had forgotten Thomas-Tommy, could drink when he was in the mood. In the end, although we did lose every single game to Tommy, we did keep them close enough to be interesting. Tommy liked that. I could tell. When the band started playing, Tommy decided he’d had enough and went to sit down to listen to the music.

The band was the Classical Durples. I hadn’t heard them before, so Reese and I hung around at the bar for a few songs. They could play anything, from country to blues to rock. Their lead singer was a woman. I almost choked on my beer when the band introduced her as Patty. I looked over at Tommy. He was mesmerized. I knew how this was going to end even if Tommy didn’t.
