Stuck on You by Jenn Faulk

~Edie~

Of all the things she loved about her job, one of her favorite parts was watching Glen rehearse with the band.

“Kentucky rain keeps pouring down,” he crooned as she watched from the back, ready to adjust the sound board as she multitasked on her laptop, designing an ad for a big charity show they were doing in a few months. The Hunka Hunka Burning Love show, benefiting a foundation that provided housing in the area for families of cancer patients undergoing treatment in the city. It had been Edie’s idea, given some needs she’d heard about from some visitors at her church and her own memories of a time when Tate’s family had been in need themselves in a similar way.

Back then, though, it had been her family that had opened up their guest house to the Andersons. She praised God for that even now because it was how she’d met him, after all.

“Hey.”

And speaking of, there was Tate, leaning against the side of the sound booth.

“Hey, you,” she said as Glen continued prancing across the stage. “UPS get your order straightened out?”

“Yeah,” Tate nodded as he watched Glen. “Kentucky Rain. Your favorite.”

Edie sighed appreciatively as Glen belted out the loudest part.

“Searching for you, in the cold Kentucky rain!”

“He knows it, too,” Edie said, as Glen pointed to the back of the room in a very un-Elvis like fashion and winked at her, swiveling his hips with even greater gusto.

“You have a very weird relationship with your boss,” Tate murmured.

Edie looked over to see him frowning at this.

“It is weird,” she said. “But Glen’s weird. And so am I. But we would have to be to make this our life’s work.”

Tate laughed softly.

“Did you know that Glen’s married?” she asked.

“Really?” Tate responded, surprised. “I’ve never met his wife.”

“She’s not an Elvis fan,” Edie said, her voice lowered as though this news was scandalous.

“No way,” Tate said.

“She prefers the Beatles,” Edie said. “Which is neither here nor there, but it means that Glen is off the market, which is good because I wasn’t ever interested.”

“Ahh,” Tate said.

“Because he’s a whole lot older than me,” Edie said. “And he’s Glen, so, you know.”

“Weird,” Tate finished, smiling over at her and looking at what she was doing on her laptop. “New show, huh?”

“This,” she said, turning the computer towards him proudly, “is actually the same show, advertised a little differently. It’s the same set Glen normally does, but I’m rebranding it as something new for our charity show.”

“Charity show,” Tate said. “I might have heard something about that. It’s for that cancer foundation.”

There was some sadness in his eyes at this. She could understand that.

“Not so much for the cancer foundation,” she said. “It’s more of a fundraiser to help the families of those who are going through treatment. Providing funds and places for them to stay while they’re here at the cancer center.”

“That’s wonderful,” Tate said thoughtfully. “Like what your family did for us.”

Yes. Something like that.

“That’s my hope,” she said. “We’re going to start running this ad, once I finish, on every social media outlet out there.
