I GOT a truck in Duncan at a pretty low figure. The guy wanted fifteen bucks a day for it, but he was laid up with a bad foot and after I showed him he wasn’t making anything with it standing in his driveway he gave it to me for eight. George thought that was a buy, a real steal, and that’s about the only time I ever saw him pleased.

PART TWO

9

I GOT a truck in Duncan at a pretty low figure. The guy wanted fifteen bucks a day for it, but he was laid up with a bad foot and after I showed him he wasn’t making anything with it standing in his driveway he gave it to me for eight. George thought that was a buy, a real steal, and that’s about the only time I ever saw him pleased.

“You’ve got the hang of it,” he said. “Save a buck here and another buck there.”

That was okay with me as long as he didn’t try it on yours truly again.

The surfaces of the courts were hard like rock, but I told him we ought to haul in the clay first, put it in little piles and let it dry out while we were busting up the crust.

“You’re thinking,” he said, complimenting me for the second time in almost as many minutes.

I was thinking of myself. The clay, no matter how good it was, would have to be sifted through a wire screen and if you’ve ever sifted wet clay through a wire screen you know it can make a pretzel out of even a strong man’s back. I didn’t mind working, and I was willing to do my share, but I wanted to do it as easily as I could and not poke a rib through my side.

Diana said she would start working on the courts, roughing them up with the back of a rake, but I told her it was too much work for a girl.

“You could paint some of the floors,” I said. “Or the walls. You get one of those roller things and you can do the walls slick as a cat.”

George stayed out of our discussion. I guess he didn’t care what his wife did as long as she worked. “I’d rather be out in the sun,” she said.

“Well, suit yourself.”

“We can both paint inside when it rains.”

“Yeah.”

Of course, this is what I was trying to get away from, both of us working close together. If I could keep her inside, out of sight, I wouldn’t think about her so much. But she was the boss, or one of the bosses, and I could argue just so much with her.

“I’ll work on the courts,” she said.

“And maybe I’ll help,” George said.

I knew he wouldn’t.

The truck was old, and it rattled like crazy but it had a dump body and that’s what we needed. Of course, the clay had to be shoveled onto it, which was a tough job, but it could be dumped off and that would save a lot of effort.

I hated to go out there to the Hotel Gordon the first time but I forced myself to do it. I left the truck parked in the driveway, right smack in front of the entrance, and I went in to pay for the load.

Sid was behind the desk.

“Hello, Mac,” he said.

I told him what I wanted and gave him the dough. “You look like a working man,” he said.
