Emma

Earlier that morning

I woke up in a fog of bliss with a smile on my face. I barely remembered coming home—it was honestly a blur. I wasn’t intoxicated, or otherwise inebriated, I was just high on my first real taste of passion. I stayed in Roy’s arms until the sun lit up the horizon, and then I had him drive me back to my car. We shared one more kiss before we said goodbye, and it was as breathtaking as the first. I was glad my mother didn’t wait up for me because she would have never made it. It wasn’t like I had to explain myself to her, but I was never the type to show up at the crack of dawn after spending the night with a guy. It was a shameless walk to my bedroom, and I dozed off for a couple of hours before I was woken up by a text message from Sonya.

Sonya: Want to go dress shopping?

Emma: Sure! What time?

Sonya: Noon? I’ll pick you up.

Emma: Sounds good!

Sonya: I want to hear all about your date with Roy!

Emma: Okay. 🙂

I took a quick shower and went downstairs. My mother was in the living room watching television, so I joined her after I got a cup of coffee and a muffin. The news was still talking about Anabelle Prescott’s kidnapping, but it wasn’t the only story—it seemed that a celebrity named Madison Snow had been kidnapped as well. I remembered her from a television show that I watched when I was younger. Everyone called her Doll Face, which was a fitting name considering her perfect porcelain complexion.

“Are you going to go out with Sonya again today?” My mother looked over at me and I saw concern on her face.

“Yeah, that’s the plan. We’re going to look at wedding dresses. Why?” I tilted my head inquisitively. “Is something wrong?”

“I don’t know.” She exhaled sharply. “Two girls in Chicago have been kidnapped—I’m just worried. I don’t want anything to happen to you.”

“I’ll be fine.” I rolled my eyes and chuckled. “I don’t even think those two cases are related.”

“It just seems like the world is going crazy out there. Mr. Weber was arrested and then died in a riot at the jail and now two girls have been kidnapped in broad daylight—I don’t understand what is happening to this city.” She swallowed hard.

“Maybe you should watch something besides the news…” I leaned forward and put my hand on her knee. “Things have always been crazy and that’s all you’re going to hear about if you watch the news all day.”

“Yeah, I guess so.” She nodded. “Just promise that you’ll be careful. I don’t know what I would do if something happened to you.”

“I will, I promise.” I tried to reassure her with a smile.

“Oh goodness, I didn’t even ask how your date was. I have just been so out of it staring at the awful stuff on the news. Did you have a good time?” A hint of happiness returned to her worried eyes.
