‘We’ll work our way down,’ Francis said. ‘Start from the top floor and finish up in the cellars. And whatever breathes, walks, crawls or slithers, we’ll chat up.’

Fred tightened a slim leather belt round her waist. ‘And what about that which neither breathes, walks, crawls nor slithers?’

‘Those I will leave for you to deal with.’

‘Thank you. Why are we taking a torch? And a roll of twine?’

‘Because in my experience cellars in these old country houses spread out a bit and are rarely fitted with electric light once you pass the wine bins.’

Fred shivered. ‘Don’t. I remember those under Hadleigh Hall.’

Francis shrugged: ‘I doubt if we’ll find a hadel-monster rooted into a wall here. I’m going through the motions, but I’m certain all we have to deal with is a shadow relic. Once it has materialized we’ll do a cleaning up job and call it a day.’

Fred accepted the bag containing the torch and twine, slung it and one holding a bottle of charged water over her shoulder, then followed the psychic detective on to the landing and up the second flight of stairs.

They came up on to a narrow corridor that had a line of doors on one side and sash windows that were situated around three feet apart on the other. One door opened and a girl wearing a bath towel and nothing else, emerged and shot them a startled glance. Apparently recognizing them she asked:

‘Is there anything I can do to help you? These are the staff quarters.’

Francis gave her his most winsome smile. ‘Sorry if we intrude, but we have Sir Robert’s permission to examine the house from roof to cellar. So I though we’d start from the top.’

The girl’s healthy freckled face was enhanced by a broad grin.

‘Good grief! You don’t want to examine my bedroom, do you? It’s in a hell of a mess, apart from which . . . ’

Francis shook his head. ‘No, that won’t be necessary. Fred here just wants to sort of . . .’

‘Test the atmosphere? I know how you work having read all about your more famous cases. At least the ones that man writes up. I forget his name at the moment.’

‘Dramatizes dreadfully,’ Francis murmured. ‘Yes, you’ve got the rights of the matter. But not to worry. We don’t expect anything out of the ordinary up here.’

The bath towel slipped off one shoulder and the girl made no move to replace it. ‘I know. Don’t look surprised. Most sensible people accept ESP and psychic phenomena these days. No, your hunting ground is in the east wing. The large with-drawing room, ground floor.’

Fred put her head on to one side and managed to look coy, innocent and extremely young. ‘Have you been there? Had a look round?’

The girl expressed surprise. ‘Of course. Have to anyway. The wing is still in use, although the bedrooms remain empty most of the year. Well, they don’t entertain much. The local gentry won’t have anything to do with them. And his city pals can be housed in the main building.
