CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Shortly after closing time, Queenie left the Horse and Groom with Frank Graves and walked to her flat nearby.

To Frank’s surprise it was tastefully furnished. The living room had a three-piece suite in soft shades of beige and brown, with brighter cushions to lift it. His surprise must have been obvious because Queenie grinned at him.

‘What did you expect, something brash and flash?’

‘Yes, I suppose I did,’ he admitted.

‘Never jump to conclusions,’ she said as she walked to the kitchen and put the kettle on. ‘I’m always hungry when I get home. Fancy some scrambled eggs?’

‘Sounds good to me,’ he answered. He stood in the doorway watching her as she bustled around, preparing the eggs, putting bread ready to toast.

Pointing, she said, ‘There are cups, saucers and plates in that cupboard. Get them and put them on the table, will you?’

A few minutes later, they sat down to eat.

‘So, tell me about yourself,’ she said.

‘Oh, I’m not very interesting.’

She cast a knowing look in his direction. ‘I’m a bloody good judge of character and I’m sure you have led quite a life, one way and another.’

Frank chuckled. ‘You are quite a lady.’

Queenie burst out laughing. ‘That’s the last thing I am. So, Frank, you’re a stranger in town, is that it?’

‘Not exactly. Fve been here before to visit an old friend.’

‘Anyone I might know?’

‘Maybe – he seems to be pretty well known. I’m talking about Eddie Chapman.’

Queenie’s interest was immediately caught. ‘Tell me more,’ she said.

The last guests at the Blue Pelican had left. The tables were cleared, the glasses washed up and put away. When the club was back to its pristine condition, the staff were dismissed and Eddie took Tilly upstairs to his apartment where he made them some coffee.

They sat together on the settee, and he put his arm round her and kissed her.

‘What was that for?’

‘For being at my side tonight, for being a perfect hostess – and for being you.’

‘What do you mean, being me? I can hardly be anyone else!’

‘And I thank God for that, darling Tilly. Most people came here tonight for a reason. The bank manager to see that his investment was paying off, the Williams brothers to see how well I was doing, hoping I would fail, your brother to see you were being treated right by me . . . and Greta to cause trouble. I’m not too sure why your ex-boyfriend came, though, are you?’

‘No. Just to have an enjoyable evening, I expect. After all, why shouldn’t he?’

‘You’re probably right.’ He sipped his coffee, then looking at Tilly he said, ‘I would really like it if you were free to spend more time with me. Your job puts too many restrictions on your time.’

‘I know, but I have to earn a living.’

‘You could work for me.’

Tilly was more than a little surprised by the suggestion. ‘Doing what?’

‘Being my assistant. I would pay you well.’

‘But that would change everything!’ With a look of consternation she said, T don’t think that would work at all.
