Chapter 11

Derron

If they ever really want to bring peace to the Middle East, they need to call in firefighters to negotiate. I’ve been with the department for eight years, and I’m convinced that nothing, not even trilateral arms deals, could be more complicated than working out a shift swap among veteran firefighters.

Chapter 11

Derron

If they ever really want to bring peace to the Middle East, they need to call in firefighters to negotiate. I’ve been with the department for eight years, and I’m convinced that nothing, not even trilateral arms deals, could be more complicated than working out a shift swap among veteran firefighters.

It’s not that I blame the guys for driving a hard bargain. We all work about ten shifts per month, all for twenty-four hours each. Most days, it isn’t as bad as it sounds. Assuming we catch a break between calls, sleeping, eating, and goofing off all count toward our time. Most of the guys plan three or four days in a row, allowing them to maximize days off. That’s where the problem comes in. After accounting for fishing, hunting, second jobs, soccer games, and everything else, there isn’t a lot of room to accommodate a last-minute trade for a guy to slip off and see someone who isn’t even his girlfriend. I have to cash in a lot of favors, but it’s worth it. I need to see for myself that Sofia’s okay.

I don’t know what made me call her last night when I got her text. It was probably just a selfish impulse to hear her voice. Whatever the reason, I’m glad I did. I don’t fully understand the problem yet, but I could tell from Sofia’s voice that she was in trouble. I was lucky Matt’s precinct was just around the corner. Strictly speaking, he probably shouldn’t have used an official vehicle to perform the rescue operation, but Matt’s a captain and is able to bend the rules. Besides, he was definitely performing a public service. Think of it as rescuing a very sexy kitten from a bar-shaped tree.

I leave the station a little after three in the morning. It is barely three-thirty when I pull up in front of Sofia’s building. Parking is easy in the early morning hours. I find a space right in front of the bakery beneath her apartment. Even though it will be hours before the shop is opened, I’m surrounded by the warm cinnamon smell of baking as soon as I step outside my car.

I frown when I realize the door to the upstairs is unlocked. Hopefully, it was just a careless tenant, but I don’t like that Sofia is at risk. I make a note to follow up later and let myself inside before hesitating again on the landing outside apartment 206.

It is really, really early, and Sofia probably just wants to sleep, but I can’t stop myself from knocking on the door.

It takes a few more rounds of knocking before anything can be heard inside the apartment, but she finally begins to stir. I hear the creak of floorboards, the click of the deadbolt, and finally the squeal of hinges as the door cracks open.

It’s Sofia.

Her hair is a crazy mess. Deep brown curls stick out in a million directions. Her eyes are puffy and red. She’s wearing a Penn State T-shirt and a pair of cotton boxers.
