Chapter 4

Next morn at Paternoster Row

‘Come down, Jack. There be naught to fear, lad.’ Seb leaned through the trapdoor so his head was up in the loft where the apprentices slept. ‘You cannot expect Coroner Bulman to climb up to you.’

‘I ain’t comin’ down, master,’ Jack whined, ‘Yer knows why not.’

Seb sighed, climbed the remaining rungs of the ladder and stepped into the loft.

‘Jack,’ he whispered, moving close to the heap of bedding that was the lad’s hideaway. ‘Have pity, won’t you? You must realise the coroner be far too fat to squeeze through that hole. Would you have him wedged there until he wastes away sufficient to get out again?’

Muffled giggles sounded beneath the blanket, just as Seb had hoped.

‘How does I know he won’t arrest us?’

‘Why would he? You have done no wrong. Once you have spoken with Master Bulman, Mistress Em has prepared your favourite breakfast.’

Slowly, reluctantly, a tousled head appeared out of the nest of bedding.

‘Yer sure the c’roner ain’t one of ’em?’

‘You should know better than I, lad: you saw what came to pass in St Mary’s, as I did not. Besides, Master Jude knows Coroner Bulman well, serving as his sometime clerk, and he says we can trust him. And you know Master Jude be as suspicious of the law as any man.’

Seb pealed back the last blanket. Perhaps he shouldn’t have been surprised but he certainly raised an eyebrow for Jack was fully clothed, right down to his muddy boots and rumpled cloak, in fear of having to flee for his life at a moment’s notice. Emily would not be pleased at the filth upon the linen sheets but Seb made no remark, having finally persuaded the lad to leave his bed. Instead, he pulled the youngster’s clothing into some semblance of order, smoothed down his unkempt hair that stood on end and smiled – reassuringly, he hoped.

Jack dithered by the ladder.

‘You go down first, master, pleeease.’

‘You’ll not get back in your bed if I do?’

‘Nah.’

‘Promise upon your oath?’

The lad nodded and crossed himself.

‘Promise.’

Seb went down the ladder. Master Bulman waited with Jude on the outside landing.

‘He is coming.’

‘I don’t know what all this fuss is about, Foxley?’ Bulman said. ‘You say ’tis a most serious matter but the fellow can’t be bothered to get out of bed to speak of it.’

‘The kitchen will be a warmer place for the interview, sir,’ Seb offered. ‘My wife will serve mulled ale.’

‘Oh, very well. But this had better be worth my time and trouble.’

As Seb and Jude escorted the coroner to the kitchen, Jude whispered to his brother:

‘You’re certain the little bugger won’t make a run for it?’

‘He promised me.’

‘And you believe the word of that scallywag?’

‘Jude, if we don’t believe his word that he will come down, then how can we believe the rest of his tale? Are we wasting the coroner’s time?’

Finally, when the coroner was already well into his second cup of ale, Jack appeared. Bulman ignored the scruffy lad, thinking he was a menial, a scullery-boy or some such.
