The Drum Book: A History of the Rock Drum Kit by Jeff Nicholls

WHEN IS A HEAD A DRUM?

While the rest of the American drum industry struggled, Remo chose the early 1980s to branch into the drum business. The move stemmed from experiments with heads which had been chemically treated to give them a ‘menmory’. These heads retained their tension and didn’t require tuning. The Remo Pre-Thned System (PTS) appeared in 1982 and it was a real eve-opener. When you hear it said that most of a drum’s sound comes from the head you probably don’t take it literally Well, try to get hold of a Remo pre-tuned head. Hold the edge of the head with your fingers, strike it, and yes… on its own it really does sound like a drum. Pretty freaky

Remo produced rather feeble PTS kits for the heads to clip onto. They weren’t overly successful. But a couple of years later, in 1985, Remo moved into the proper drum kit arena with the Encore line. The Encore featured shells made from a material called Acousticon, which is wood fibre impregnated with resin. ‘T’hey were covered in a coloured plastic material called Quadura. Despite the usual misgivings about synthetic shells, Remo successfully won over many great players, including Ricky Lawson and’lerry Bozzio (who came to prominence with Frank Zappa). And the drums have been continually improved: today’s professional Mlastertouch line is punch); loud and resonant, although the latest version, called enWood, bows to drummer’s conservatism and has a veneer of real maple bonded to the outside of the Acousticon R shell.
