Chapter 10

Sindra rose from her nap through a layer of thick snow. Sleep was more frequent, easier since the reports of rivers freezing, ice caps forming, crops failing, sunlight waning, and snow falling in Lumen Court controlled areas.

Soon she would have enough power to be the undisputed holder of the Seat of Preface.

An impassive reflection from her frozen-over wine cup stared back from the surface. She relished the sound her nails made over the surface as they ruined the image.

The sound of tiny icicles clinking together assaulted her ears as eight timid Barbegazi clicked into her room. They always annoyed her with the sharp clinking and tinkling of their icicle hair.

Barbegazi were responsible for safely ferrying the Aerial Queen to the palace, as Balthazar was not to know about Sindra’s clandestine dealings with her. If they returned, it meant she was here.

Sindra rose from her cradle of ice and whipped to the throne room.

The queen was already seated in Sindra’s silver throne. Her severe high collar fastened with a broach and her abundant brown hair laid flat into a large bun. Steel grey eyes monitored all movement in the room.

The Aerial Queen had little patience, and Sindra could see her quiet but forced breathing.

A scraggly imp poured her a glass of Frost wine and she raised the cup to Sindra.

“I must say, this grows sweeter every time I taste it. When you sent a cask along with your gift, I was pleased.”

Sindra bowed her head. “Your Grace is most welcome. How is your mother faring?”

“The last time I visited her in the caves, she was well. She made me her emissary to Sargon’s funeral, which I was loath to attend.”

“You are not alone in this.”

“It is not surprising. The way Sargon treated your parents was less than courteous.”

Sindra lowered her lids. “When you leave, you must take a gift to your mother for me, as I am unable to do it myself.”

The Aerial Queen gave a barely visible smile, as if something amused her. “Naturally. Why she still allows me to see her is beyond my reasoning.”

“You are her daughter,” Sindra said.

Queen Dahlia leaned back into the silver throne, her face contemplative.

“The one fae who can see her without passing those imbecilic trials and yet the one fae who desires to be nowhere near her presence.”

“If your sight failed, you would not want guests coming and going either.”

“The point of her being in seclusion as the White Queen is to be alone. I should not be expected to visit at whim.”

Her voice was annoyed, coupled with the usual apathetic cadence in which everything bored her.

“Surely not,” Sindra said.

Dahlia’s ear tips perked as she took another sip. “Is your mate here?”

It was a customary question rather than a pertinent one. The lesser courts did not intermingle well with the higher courts. While the lesser courts were in charge of revels, the Aerial and Shadow courts did not associate much with the lower courts beyond matters concerning the entire realm.
