Gordon R. Dickson

THE MAN IN THE MAILBAG

Gordon R. Dickson is probably best known for his ambitious “Childe Cycle”—more commonly referred to as the “Dorsai” series—which largely focuses on the history of a race of interstellar mercenary soldiers (the Dorsai) as they work their destiny out against a complex Future History of warring planets and philosophies. But in his forty-eight-year career, Dickson’s written just about every kind of science fiction that it’s possible to write, from broad slapstick social comedies to broodingly introspective psychological studies, as well as a fair amount of fantasy. The “Childe Cycle” consists of the controversial Soldier, Ask Not (considered by many to be an “answer” to Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers), No Room For Man, The Far Call, The Tactics of Mistake, Dorsai!, The Spirit of Dorsai, Young Bleys, and, most recently, The Final Encyclopedia and The Chantry Guild; the Dorsai short stories have been collected in Lost Dorsai. He won a Hugo Award in 1965 for the short novel version of “Soldier, Ask Not,” a Nebula Award in 1966 for “Call Him Lord,” and another two Hugo Awards in 1981 for “Lost Dorsai” and “The Cloak and the Staff.” His other books include Arcturus Landing, The Alien Way, Sleepwalker’s World, The Last Master, Hour of the Horde, Way of the Pilgrim, Wolf and Iron, Timestorm, Wolfling, The Pritcher Mass, The Space Swimmers, and a series of fantasy novels that include The Dragon and the George, The Dragon Knight, and The Dragon on the Border. His most recent novel is The Dragon and the Djinn. Dickson’s many short stories have been assembled in the collections In Iron Years, The Book of Gordon R. Dickson, None But Man, Love Not Human, Beginnings, Ends, Invaders!, Mindspan, The Earth Lords, Foreward!, The Man From Earth, Steel Brother, and others. His long series of comic “Hoka” stories, written with Poul Anderson, have been assembled in the collections Hoka! and Earthman’s Burden; there is also a “Hoka” novel, Star Prince Charlie. The story that follows, “The Man in the Mailbag,” was later expanded into the novel Special Delivery, which was followed by a sequel, Spacepaw.

Although they frequently contain a strong element of physical action, Dickson’s stories are usually thoughtful and thought-provoking as well, sometimes even somber, revolving around the changes in philosophies and ethics and social codes necessary to ensure humanity’s survival in the complex and rapidly evolving social environments we’ll have to deal with in the future.

Sometimes, though (the series of “Hoka” stories he wrote in collaboration with Poul Anderson also come to mind), he writes one just for the fun of it. And few stories then or now have been as purely entertaining as the fast and funny tale that follows (although, come to think of it, all that speculation about social codes and the most effective way to adapt your behavior in order to manipulate the society you’re dealing with is still there, afterall, just played in a slightly different key), dealing with the misadventures of a hapless
