Chapter 30

Leif made his way back to court with a heavy heart. It was true that he had completed the king’s mission – the rebels were thwarted and hopefully he would be able to conceal Freydis’s part in the whole affair, so that he and his family should be safe.

Still, the closer they got to Trondheim, the more confused he felt. He was unsure what to think as far as Thorgunna was concerned, nor how he would speak to her before he left for Greenland – what he might say to her when they meet, so he had imagined, for the last time.

Again and again he attempted to understand her, and could not. Not quite, anyway. He thought that her interest in him was superficial, until that night when he told her the story of his marriage and touched her heart.

King Olaf received him with great cordiality.

“You have served me well, Erikson,” he said. “Rest assured, you will be rewarded. I know how to value determination and courage.”

Leif inclined his head slightly in thanks. “I had good fortune, Your Grace,” he said, “and very timely it was, too – for soon, we must take advantage of the currents that will enable us to return home.”

King Olaf looked slightly less pleased. “You are determined to leave soon, then?”

“I fear I have not much choice in the matter, Your Grace. I know my father expects our return. I cannot disappoint him.”

“Well, at any rate, this will not be your last visit to Norway,” the king said encouragingly. “This thought will cheer you when you return to Greenland.”

“Certainly, Your Grace,” confirmed Leif, though privately he thought that nothing would cheer him better than the familiar sight of Brattahlid.

His meeting with Thorgunna took place sooner than he could have expected. It was the middle of the night, and the knocks on his door did not wake him until after a while. He was used to noises – the house he grew up in was far more crowded than this place, and there was not a hint of privacy for most of its inhabitants. Once he finally woke, raised his head and blinked, momentarily blinded by the flame of a candle that had not yet gone out, he hurried to the door – and on opening it, saw the figure of a woman in a dress of brown roughspun wool. Her face was covered against the night’s chill by a faded dark cloak.

Without saying a word, she stepped forward, closed the door behind her and threw back the hood of her cloak. Leif exhaled in surprise:

“Thorgunna!” He meant to find some polite words, but his tongue failed him, and instead he cried, “This is madness! Someone could have seen you coming here and recognize you, no matter how you are dressed.”

“The court sleeps,” she said indifferently and looked at him with bold eyes. He made himself refrain from any gesture of intimacy. “I am glad to see you back safe and well, Leif. I was worried, for I knew, of course, where the king had sent you.
