A shoulder to cry on

Keith’s funeral was as grim and ghastly as everyone thought it would be. Beatrice wanted all her children to attend the funeral, so they could grieve properly, to quash any belief that their father would ever miraculously return.

‘It’ll be better for them all in the long run and save me having to find a babysitter for Tristan. I know you’ll want to be at Keith’s funeral, so I won’t ask you to babysit,’ Beatrice told her mother.

‘You’re right. I want to be there to support you and the kids, love,’ Julia said.

‘Don’t know where I’d be without you, to be honest,’ Beatrice said, meaning every word of it.

Her mother had been a tower of strength to Beatrice, helping with the children and the organisation of the funeral. Another source of support had been Carl, who’d naturally been devastated after learning his friend had perished while attempting to visit him. The sandy-haired, ruddy-faced, seemingly gentle giant, had frequently visited Beatrice after Keith’s death. Carl discovered he needed her support to battle grief as much as she needed his. Keith had been one of Carl’s only friends, thanks to his girlfriend Denise’s annoying, relentless control over him.

If Denise had been well around the time of Keith’s death, she would have ensured she’d have accompanied Carl to Beatrice’s home. But, Denise had been experiencing sharp stomach pains for months and was confined to bed when Carl had received the phone call telling him Keith had frozen to death so near to, yet so far from, his home. His selfish girlfriend was unhappy about Carl leaving her to suffer in bed to go and comfort Keith’s widow. Denise had never liked or trusted Beatrice on the rare occasions they’d all met up over the years, mainly because Beatrice was undeniably more attractive than her.

Denise was just about well enough to accompany Carl to Keith’s funeral. It annoyed her to witness how Carl and Beatrice were demonstrably united by grief. His girlfriend’s hard, disapproving looks when he cried on Beatrice’s slender shoulder angered Carl so much, the couple rowed on their return home.

‘Why were you glaring at me all the time when I was so upset this afternoon? It’s permitted for a friend of the deceased to cry at their funeral, you know. Have you forgotten that Keith is … was my best mate?’ Carl asked his mousy-haired, indignant girlfriend.

‘I could see how that woman was all over you. She couldn’t keep her hands off you,’ Denise snapped back.

Carl had long since grown weary of being isolated from the world by his possessive girlfriend, but had been too busy knocking out the orders for his wrought ironwork business to tackle her about it. He hated rows; Denise was more verbally dexterous than him and usually won any debate. But, on the traumatic day of the funeral, Carl was distraught enough to tackle her head-on.

‘Oh, for God’s sake, can you hear yourself? The poor woman was beside herself with grief. Was I
