Two days later Derek spotted the pack from his bedroom window, and promptly dropped to the floor and crawled behind a tallboy where Anne found him two hours later.

‘Hiding from the pack is like hiding from lightning,’ she explained. ‘If they’re tuned in on you —there’s no place to hide.’

The courage which is born of desperation finally allowed him to stand upright and once again look down upon the grotesque, a form of reality that had escaped from a nightmare.

Maybe they were not human in the accepted sense of the word, but must have substance which meant some connection with the world of matter. There had to be a way of destroying them: bombarding them with Molotov cocktails for example. Riddling their bodies with machine gun bullets. Blowing them up. Burning them.

Anne who several times had displayed a gift of telepathy, said quietly: ‘There would be more — or creatures much worse. It is said in Wittering Grange there are interbred crossbreeds that can lick flesh from bones and boil eyeballs with a single glance.’

‘But even they could be destroyed by one means or another,’ Derek insisted.

‘Yes, if you were very clever and enormously brave, you might destroy an entire pack of Karviles and maybe every kind of mon-breed sent against you, which would mean the Lord Marcus rising up from his bed of contemplation and sending his rage across the cosmos, for he can never forgive anyone who has committed the crime of peace-destruction. Particularly his peace.’

‘But isn’t the Lord Marcus made of flesh and blood?’ Derek enquired.

Anne made a X sign. ‘It is not for us to ask of what material the Lord Marcus is formed. He is a phenomenon that cannot be explained in the totally inadequate word talk of meat-eaters. He is neither dead nor alive. He is the eldest son of Count Dracula. Born in 1191 out of Barbushka, the count’s number one wife, he exists in every age, save those centuries when civilization lay buried in ashes and mankind was reduced to a few stumbling scarecrows that rooted for food among the ruins. Yet even that catastrophe was put right by adjusting time, so that that period became was-not-but-happened.’

‘But every living being is subjected to the certainty of destruction,’ Derek desperately wanted to anchor his frail craft to the sand dune of hope. ‘Your Lord Marcus would fall before the full force of a machine gun.’

‘You just don’t understand. Yes, you would kill him today, but he would still be alive in yesterday and tomorrow. You mustn’t under-estimate the enormous power that a thousand years of experience generates. Also, power and knowledge leads to the ability to contact other lives, so eventually one being can become the depository of a billion years of experience stretching back to the first great explosion from which the universe was born. That is how gods are formed.’

‘But —’ Derek would have persisted, but Anne raised her voice and suddenly looked very much like a lady vampire.

‘It would be more to the point if you were to concentrate on your immediate problem.
