Chapter Fifteen

God’s Breath, Lars moaned to himself, I’m bloody dead again!

The thought passed as quickly as it had come. As logical as it seemed, he knew it wasn’t so.

If that’s true, then John-William isn’t dead either. And that means both of us are somewhere else. . .

Before he could ponder that, another figure appeared in John-William’s wake. Lars recognized her at once. It was Elaine, young Sean’s lover. He’d sat beside the lad and watched her Drift the year before. Elaine saw Lars and stretched her arms out to reach him. Lars tried to help, but his motions did nothing to bring them closer. Lars watched as some unseen current carried her off. As long as he could see her, she mouthed a single silent word: Sean . . . Sean . . . Sean. . . !

There were other Drifters about, but none close enough for him to see who they were. They floated like lonely motes in an endless room, never getting overly close or farther away.

For all the strangeness of his surroundings, Lars felt oddly at ease. He sensed, somehow, that nothing could happen to him here. Perhaps, he decided, because this was a place where nothing had ever happened and never would. He wasn’t at all concerned that he’d share John-William’s fate. It was something he simply knew. John-William couldn’t escape, but he could. He wasn’t a part of this; he was merely passing through.

Passing through to where, for God’s sake!

There was another thing he knew that should have frightened him but didn’t. John-William and the girl had only seemed to move close and then away. There was no such thing in this place as close and far–no moment between the time they’d seemed to be where they were and then gone. Lars knew for certain not the smallest part of a second had ever passed or ever would. He wasn’t sure how he knew, he simply did.

Another thing that didn’t exist was the aftereffect of drink. Lars had never been more sober in his life; even the bilious taste of Ham’s corn ale had disappeared. This was surely a double blessing, he decided. Clearly, drinking and jumping didn’t mix. He wondered why no one had learned this before, and saw the answer at once: No one but Lars Haggart himself had been foolish enough to try.

Lars took another long look at the vast stretch of nothing. Wherever he was or wasn’t, it was time to be somewhere else. This time, he was in no hurry at all. He let himself relax, took half a dozen long and easy breaths, and made absolutely certain his image was clear. Weathered wood and soft light, the sweet smell of hay and the shape of eaves coming together over his head.

Lars vanished–

–reappeared

–and fell drunkenly to the ground, retching between his hands. He shook all over as Ham’s corn ale and everything else he’d ever consumed tried to exit his body at once. Cold sweat peppered his face. He gasped for breath and spit bile.
