PEER NETWORKS AS SOURCES OF SOCIAL STRESS

As psychosocial processes related to status, rejection, and isolation transpire in social groups, they leave traces on the structure of social ties. Thus, the patterning of connections represents structural measures of social status, rejection, and isolation. Another important insight into social dynamics provided by the network perspective involves recognition of multiplexity of social ties underscoring that both positive (i.e., helpful and supportive) and negative (i.e., strained and conflicted) interpersonal exchanges occur among group members, leading to the emergence of positive and negative social ties (for a review, see Labianca & Brass, 2006). All of these psychosocial processes have been connected to physiological stress responses at the level of the individual, and here we describe how these research domains could be advanced using insights from social network theory and analytical applications.
