CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Cody turned to me as we went back inside. “I’m talking mainly about Barbara. We didn’t think they knew about her part in this. But I’m sure Sandoval told them everything before he died. Let’s get up to Casa Watt fast.” He set the hand on the floor inside the door. What a thing to come home to. I couldn’t get the whole picture out of my mind.

“You better come along,” I said to Maya. “I don’t want you here alone. If they’re pounding on the door now they could be coming over the walls next.” Probably the wrong thing to say, but why pretend otherwise? I grabbed the keys to the artmobile and we dashed up the hill.

“You know how I feel now?” I said to nobody in particular, narrowly threading my way through the arches on Santo Domingo, “I was the one who picked his name off the Internet and now he’s dead. Tortured to death. He could have kept the codex, but he just gave it to Barbara.” At the speed I was driving the tires were pounding on the cobblestones like a Cuban conga player.

“He was a principled man,” said Cody, over the noise.

Maya didn’t say anything. She just put her hand on my arm. We reached Barbara’s street in Los Balcones and a moment later pulled into her drive. The house looked uninhabited. Cody got out and drew his gun.

“No one on the street,” he said. No lights were showing in the windows, even though the sun was well below the hills across the basin of San Miguel. I got out of the car; he went to the windows, looking in, I went to the door. It was locked. I could hear nothing from inside. Of course the walls and front door were so thick you wouldn’t hear a cannon firing inside. I was trying to decide whether we should break a window to get in when the silver Mercedes pulled through the gate and stopped behind the artmobile. Barbara got out gracefully and when I came up to her she smelled of martinis. Her hair was up and she was wearing a black suit with a sapphire pendant, and shoes with square black buckles. She had her key in her hand and a look of surprise on her face.

“What’s…?” Cody came up behind her and swept her up with both hands under her legs so that his body was between hers and the gate and went up the front steps as fast as I had ever seen him move. I didn’t know whether he was trying to shield her from a waiting assassin or he just wanted to put his arms around her. Either one would be understandable. We came up right behind them as he snatched the key from her hand and unlocked the door. She punched in her security code as he set her down.

“Wow,” she said. “That’s really the way to greet a girl.” She reached up and put her hand on Cody’s cheek.
