Chapter Nineteen

One day Odd came to the edge of the forest. He was very tired, and he sat down under an oak. Then he saw a man walking past. He wore a blue-flecked cloak, high shoes, had a reed in his hand, and he had gold emblazoned gloves, was an average man in stature and genteel in appearance; a lowered hood covered his face. He had a big moustache and long beard, both of them red. He turned to Odd, where he sat, and greeted him by name. Odd welcomed him and asked who he was. He said he was Grani, called Raudgrani. “I know all about you, Arrow-Odd,” he said, “it seems to me good to hear, since you are the greatest hero and an accomplished man, but you have few followers, and travel rather like a pauper, and it is bad that a man like you should be so reduced.”

“It has been long now, though,” said Odd, “that I have not been a leader of men.”

“It has been long now, though,” said Odd, “that I have not been a leader of men.”

“Will you now swear an oath of brotherhood with me?” Raudgrani said. “It’s hard to deny such an offer,” said Odd, “and I will take it up.”

“You are not yet wholly luckless,” said Raudgrani. “Now I will tell you that there are two champions in the east of this country and they have twelve ships. They are sworn brothers; one comes from out of Denmark and is called Gardar, and the other Sirnir and comes out of Gautland. I know of no other heroes on this side of the sea and they do well at most things, and there I will bring you into brotherhood with them, yet you’ll have the most say of us all, although following my advice will be best. But where would you want to sail if this is arranged as I have now said?”

“It is always in my mind that I would find Ogmund Eythjof’s-Bane, who is called by another name, Tussock.”

“Stop, stop,” said Raudgrani, “and don’t say that, because he is not a man of humankind, is Ogmund, and if you meet Ogmund another time you will get from him far worse than before, so put this idea to find him from your mind.” Odd answered: “One thing I wish to do is to avenge Thord, my blood brother, and I shall never give up until I can find him, if that is my fate.”

“Do you want me to tell you,” said Raudgrani, “how Ogmund was born? If I do, you will see there is no chance that he will be killed by mortal men, if you know of his origin.

“Now is it told first in the tale that Harek was the name of a king who ruled Bjarmaland when you made your Viking raid, you will remember what damage you did to the Bjarmians. When you had gone away, they thought they had got a bad deal and would gladly take revenge, if they could. This was how they did it, they got a giantess who
