Chapter 19

“Hailey, please, just hear me out,” he slurred.

“Jake.” I stared back at him through the dim glow of the porch light, unable to sort out why he was here.

He stumbled over his right foot, correcting himself, then standing back up straight.

“Are you…drunk?”

“No, are you?” His lips turned up into a smile and his eyes scrunched together.

“You’re such an asshole, you’re obviously drunk. You’re swaying.”

“All the better so you miss me when you shoot,” he said with a chuckle, swinging his arms around. “Did they teach you how to hold a shotgun in the city? Because you can’t hold that thing for shit.”

He laughed again, and admittedly I think I probably cracked a smile. As confident as I’d felt with it in my hands just moments earlier, he was right. I probably looked ridiculous, and perhaps my confidence was only an illusion to myself.

“I could use some more practice,” I agreed. “Why are you out here in the middle of the night? Did you walk from Murphy’s?”

“Yeah. Maybe. I was with your boy you know,” he slurred, still trying but failing to stand perfectly still.

“Don’t call him that. He’s not my boy. Hasn’t been since we were kids.”

“Okay, fine, I was with my brother, and he was saying all sorts of stuff.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

I stayed silent for a moment expecting him to elaborate but he didn’t. “So, you walked here in the middle of the night to stand outside my house? Or to hitch a ride home, or what? What are you doing here?”

“He’d said you’d been talking about stuff,” he continued, but then paused again.

“Geez, get to the point, Jake. Why are you here?”

“I know what you think,” he said with a nod. His jovial expression quickly changed. He stared back at me with heavy eyes, though I wasn’t sure if it was sadness or disappointment. “You think my old man did it, don’t you?”

“What?”

“Come on. Don’t pretend with me, Hailey.”

“I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about, Jake. You’re clearly drunk, so I’m not sure you even know what’s going on right now. I’m calling you an Uber.”

“I don’t need a ride, Hailey. I just wanted to tell you that you were wrong about something. You know, growing up you were never wrong, were you? Goody-two-shoes, always doing the right thing, always the smarty-pants who knew better than the rest of us… You thought you had it all figured out, right? Grow up, marry my brother, be a townie here and waste your life like the rest of us?”

“I didn’t do any of those things.” While one hand still held onto the shotgun, the other one rested on my hip.

“Well you would’ve, right? If it wasn’t for the accident?”

“I don’t know what would’ve happened.” I shrugged. I’d thought about that scenario at least a thousand times in my life, sure – but I never truly had the answer. If that accident had never happened, surely my life would be different. But better? Or worse? I really didn’t know.

“Well, you’re smart.
