Chapter Twenty-Six

Vivian glared at Jameson, her heart punching. “What do you mean, you’re not surprised? Did you see the victim at this bar the night she was killed? Did you see her with someone? Did you see someone threatening her?”

“No, no,” Jameson said, holding up his hands, shaking his head. “I don’t recognize the woman. If she came into the bar the night she was killed, then it might have been before I got here or after I left, because I didn’t see her. When I said I wasn’t surprised, I meant because the parking lot is pitch-black once the sun goes down.”

Her heartbeat returning to normal, Vivian sighed. “Oh.”

“Don’t know if you noticed it,” Jameson went on, “but there are no street lights around this area. At night, there’s a neon sign advertising the place, but half the time, it’s flickering on and off. And the neon is purple, not the brightest color to begin with, you know.”

Hands trembling from the sudden surge of adrenaline caused by Jameson’s bombshell—which hadn’t detonated, actually—Vivian returned her phone to her purse, fighting frustration and disappointment.

“It’s a shame she got hit,” said Jameson. “But, it’s damn near impossible to see when it’s dark. I’ve been telling Ratcliff to get the owner to at least string a set of Christmas lights around the building, but—”

“Thank you for your time, Mr. Jameson,” Vivian said and stood. Not bothering to say goodbye, she beckoned for Leo, still hanging back at the bar, letting her handle things, and then headed for the door.

“Jameson give you a lead?” Leo asked as they walked back to the Range Rover. Shielding her eyes from the scorching, late afternoon sun, Vivian shook her head.

Back in the SUV, Vivian slammed the passenger door closed and said, “That was a damn waste of time. The bartender didn’t remember Amal, and neither did Jameson. Although, he told me something interesting. The Purple Gecko doesn’t have any lights. It’s pitch-black after dark.”

“So you think maybe Amal was accidentally hit?” Leo asked, starting the Range Rover’s ignition.

“It’s wasn’t an accident.” She glared at him as she yanked the seatbelt and fastened it in place. “It was murder. Whoever ran her down like a dog took advantage of the fact that the parking lot was dark. I just wanted somebody to have seen Amal that night, but what would that have proved? What I need is for someone in that bar to have seen the car that hit her. I need the license plate number of the car that hit her, but how could anybody have seen anything with no street lights around?”

“And from what my sources at the police department told me, no surveillance cameras either,” Leo said, making a wide circle around the gravel lot, steering back onto Sandy Coral Road, heading toward the main thoroughfare.

“All I know is that I can’t waste any more time chasing false leads,” Vivian said, pressing her head into the headrest. “I’ve already spent too long. A month has passed.
