Chapter 15

In his home, Vigi stared into the hearth fire. The feransdomr at Brauðavatn would take place in another week, and the priest had warned him it might not go smoothly. Not that Vigi needed to be told – he was a goði, and suspected he could more readily list all the dangers of a feransdomr than the foreign priest could. He felt the quickest flash of irritation, thinking of the way the priest spoke to him – not quite condescendingly, but always in a manner that presumed Vigi would do whatever was suggested. Vigi would, of course – the priest had more than proved the value of his insights, justifying the deference already due to him as an esteemed father of the church- but Vigi was an important man himself, and it rankled some part of him to have another presume to dictate his actions.

Yet the thought barely had time to form before it flitted from Vigi’s mind. Though a foreigner, the priest had a goði’s comprehension of the political landscape of the island, and Vigi was certain the priest only ever suggested the course of action that he, the powerful, ambitious goði, would have taken anyway. Well, perhaps not where Haraldr was concerned- but Vigi had understood the logic even there, though reluctantly. If they were ever to root out the heathenism from this land, to bring it into the light of Christ, sacrifices would have to be made by all of them. Their struggle would be rewarded.

And their goal was nearly in reach. Vigi could feel it, feel it in his bones. The people were crying out for a savior, even if they did not realize it. Once the unsalvageable heathens like Kveldulf and his ilk were rooted out, once their influence had been scrubbed away, they would turn their faces to the light of God. And, perhaps, they would turn their grateful hearts to Vigi as well, he who alone had had the foresight to protect them. Who had perhaps even been chosen by God to aid the people in their hour of need.

But first he must get through the Brauðavatn feransdomr. He did not anticipate much trouble from the people of the district. The taking was as lawful as could be, and Kveldulf, while respected, was apparently not popular enough to inspire anyone to do anything stupid. The remaining household itself was unlikely to offer much resistance; without their bændur, most of the thralls and farmhands had probably left already.

But there was still Kveldulf himself. His whereabouts were not known to Vigi, nor to the priest, whose connection with God sometimes offered him information not available to Vigi. Vigi did not seriously consider that the people of Brauðavatn could cause much trouble for his own men, but he knew better than to discount a former Varangian. How a warrior for the Church itself could fall so far from the light…it sickened Vigi.

Still, Father Pétur had explained so much to him about the true faith, so much he never could have imagined.
