The dwarf

In Norse mythology there are both dwarfs and giants. The dwarfs were small beings who were believed to live underground, afraid of daylight. They were skilled smiths who could forge remarkable objects for the gods, such as Thor’s hammer and Odin’s spear. Thor’s hammer was called Mjölnir and it always hit the target when he threw it and it always returned to his hand. Dwarfs were also believed to guard treasure hoards.

Dwarfs, or persons of short stature, actually existed as physical people in the Viking Age. In this study we have found three individuals who were disproportionate in their bodies and significantly shorter than other people. They are two men and one woman who were born with diseases as a result of which they grew no taller than about 130 cm. One of the woman and one of the men were found at the Skämsta cemetery in Uppland, (Fig. 63) the other man at Kopparsvik on Gotland (Fig. 64).

Dwarfism is caused by various hereditary skeletal disorders (skeletal dysplasia). There are about 200 such different skeletal disorders. The individuals in Skämsta were born with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia; although the body is proportionate in that the spinal vertebrae are lower than normal and that legs and arms are short too, the individual is abnormally short. The disease is either caused by a mutation or inherited from one of the parents, that is to say, it is autosomal dominant. In Sweden each year 1–2 children out of 100,000 are born with the condition, and in Sweden today there are 20–30 people living with the condition.35 In most cases it is a result of mutation. The children born with the disorder are shorter than normal, 35 cm instead of around 50 cm. An adult can attain a stature of 80–140 cm. Already at birth one can see that the child looks different. The musculature is weak, and many die just after birth. For those who survive, motoric development is late, the child has a waddling gait, and the malpositioned joints show arthrosis earlier than normal, as in the case of the two dwarfs from Skämsta (Fig. 65).36 The connective tissue of the eye can also be affected, which can lead to shortsightedness.

The dwarf from Kopparsvik is judged to have been short because of a different skeletal disorder.37 Arms and legs are short and the thigh bones are curved, while the back is of normal length. This has been diagnosed as a skeletal lesion that matches one of the more common forms of dwarfism, namely, achondroplasia. This occurs more often than the one affecting the people at Skämsta; today five children in 100,000 are born with achondroplasia.38
