The Vikings of Vinland: A Saga of North America (Sagas of North America Book 1) by John F Meyer

Outlaws again!

Magnus, my father’s father was illegally grazing his sheep on a neighbor’s land. Our land had more exposure to the violent weather and there was no forage for our animals. The neighbor Runolfur Ragnorson, a descendant of Helgi Burisnon, had a temper just a quick as Magnus. When he found out about Magnus’s illegal grazing, he accosted Magnus and demanded compensation for stealing his grass. Magnus refused supposedly saying that the Lord grew the grass. The gospels tell us to share with each other and who was Runolfur to refuse to share. Runolfur retorted that if Magnus’ sheep overgrazed his, Runolfur’s land then what would happen to his sheep? Runolfur asked Magnus to pay for the grass as punishment for the theft. That was too much for our ancestor and his fiery temper. Magnus pulled his sword and without warning attacked Runolfur.

A furious sword fight ensued with neither man gaining an edge. It was said that both were accomplished swordsmen. Neither one could gain on the other. Blows rained on each of them and blood from many wounds flowed down their bodies to the ground. Finally, Runolfur while backing up slipped on a rock and fell to the ground. He was momentarily stunned and Magnus jumped on him and with a quick thrust to his chest killed him.

A special ping was called by Runolfur’s family to try Magnus. Oddi Olgiersson, a descendant of the revered Njals was the judge. Oddi judged that Magnus had knowingly murdered Runolfur and was required to pay a blood debt of 10 sheep. Magnus refused and therefore was outlawed by Oddi. In accordance with Icelandic law, Magnus had to leave the settlement for five years and have no contact with anyone in the settlement.

Magnus called together all his kinsmen, kinswomen, and children and allies. He asked who would be willing to join him in outlawry. All his kin and allies agreed and they loaded all their belongings, food, tools, weapons, and sheep onto their boats and left the settlement. Olaf, Jens and I joined with them. In all one hundred and twenty of our forebears left with Magnus in fifteen large Naskapi style boats fitted with masts towing a few small Naskapi boats for scouting out landing spots.

Magnus and our family left along with the, Bishop Snorri Karlson and a few Beothuks and Naskapi. Three boats were set aside for the sheep and chickens and two boats for grain and seed stock. We left just before Easter in the year 1328 or 300 or more years after the first settlement in this land.

Before he left, Bishop Snorri installed Jans Njalsson as Bishop. Bishop Jans would lead the South Markland settlement. With that last task, the boats were loaded and we embarked on another trek.

After leaving South Markland, we have not had any communication with the South Markland settlement. We have not heard any news of them from Skraeling traders from the Northeast. I pray frequently that all are well. We hope that they did not suffer the same fate as Markland.
