THE VIKINGS IN FRANCE

Around 800 AD, the mighty Carolingian Empire was at its zenith. Under the leadership of Charlemagne, the King of the Franks and the Christian “Emperor of the West,” it had expanded its territory until it covered most of Western Europe.

A leader as canny as Charlemagne was all too aware that his empire offered highly desirable pickings for the Vikings, and he took the precaution of building up his defenses against any possible attack. During his reign, the Vikings limited their activities to hit-and-run raids down the west coast of France.

But with his death in 814 his empire’s days as an impregnable stronghold were numbered. His successors lacked Charlemagne’s commanding presence and far-sighted vision, and under his son, Louis the Pious, the empire’s defenses began to crumble. This failure gathered momentum after Louis’ death in 840. Taking advantage of the squabbles between Louis’ son, Charles the Bald, and his brothers, the Vikings set up a colony in Gascony in south-west France. By 841, their incursions into northern France penetrated as far as Rouen and Jumièges and they raided various monasteries.

In 845 the Vikings launched the first of a series of raids up the River Seine. They became bold enough to overwinter their forces in the lower Seine valley and even penetrated as far as Paris, only withdrawing when their lust for loot was satisfied and the Emperor Charles the Bald had paid them sufficient bribes of danegeld. Offering bribe money, however, was a double-edged sword. It encouraged the invaders to leave, but it also encouraged them to return and demand an even higher price for their withdrawal. In 885-86, they besieged Paris.

One of those involved in the Seine raids was a Danish nobleman named Rollo. In 911 it was Rollo who led a huge Viking armada to the mouth of the Seine and launched an attack on both Paris and Chartres. His attack was partially repelled, but the French king, Charles the Simple, still felt compelled to offer Rollo a treaty by which the Vikings would be allowed to settle in the land around the mouth of the Seine. This land was dubbed Normandy—the “Land of the North Men”—and Rollo was granted the dukedom of the territory. In return, Rollo had to swear feudal allegiance to the king, convert to Christianity, and agree to protect the territory from further Viking attacks.

Rollo and most of his followers were Danish, but there was also a strong contingent of Norwegians. What the Scandinavian immigrants brought with them was their exceptional ability as shipbuilders and mariners, endowing Normandy with the potential to stage naval-based conquests, such as that launched against England in 1066.
