Chapter Twelve

We said nothing on the way out. I strode out of the woods angry and well ahead of the two of them. I could hear Mark and Sheila conversing behind me. Mark’s mom called for him almost as soon as he reached the street again, and Mark scowled and yelled back to her. “Coming! I’ll be right back,” he said to Sheila. “Don’t go anywhere.” He smiled at her, gave me a hard-eyed grin. Sheila hugged him. I sat on my porch steps, glowering at his retreating back, the concrete hard and warm under me.

“What’s the matter with you?” Sheila asked. “Why are you so angry?”

“Mark,” I managed to spit out. “He was going to let me drop. He wanted to hurt me.”

“What do you mean?” I could hear the disbelief in Sheila’s voice. “Rob, I was there watching. If Mark hadn’t pulled you in, you’d have fallen. I saw it. I saw it all.”

She sat next to me, the shadow of the pin oak in the yard cool over us. I leaned my head back on the wrought-iron railing, looking up at the pattern of leaves against the sky.

“You didn’t hear what he was saying to me, Sheila,” I said. “He was whispering all this crazy shit. Crazy.”

“Rob, he saved you from a nasty fall. You can’t deny that.”

“Yeah, he did. But he also made sure I knew that he could have let go.” She didn’t want to believe me. I could see the disbelief in her expression. She sat on the step alongside me, hugging her knees to herself. “It’s the truth, Sheila. I wouldn’t lie to you.”

She gave a faint nod. “On the way back,” she said. “While you were up ahead of us, Mark said…” She stopped.

“What’d he say?”

She let out a breath. “He said you’d say something like this. Said that you wouldn’t like it that he’d saved you, that you’d try to make it look different than it was.”

“And you believe him and not me?”

“No.” The answer came too quickly. “I told him he was wrong, that you weren’t like that.” I could hear doubt in her voice—at least I thought I heard it. She was smiling at me, her hand on my arm. “I believe you. Of course.”

“Look,” I told her. “He’s jealous of us. You know that already. And he’s having a tough time at home. I don’t know Mark right now. He’s changed; he’s not the same guy I grew up with. Not anymore. I’m beginning to think he might be a little dangerous, too—to me, or maybe even to you.”

She looked at me strangely then. I remember that glance: mostly the eyes. Her gaze was skittish and tentative, the type of look a person has when they reach a hand out to a dog they thought they knew and it growls at them. Or maybe she was simply surprised that I’d say that when it was what she was thinking herself. Or maybe, maybe I’d startled her with a sudden truth.
