Within a few minutes they were standing amidst a debris of paper wrappings and coloured string, embracing one another with thanks and kisses – a simple, heart-warming scene which, on the morrow, would be repeated throughout the land. For once, in the whole year, the Royal Family and their nearest kith and kin could be together in private.

The principal guest was Queen Mary, a grand and most gracious lady; if there was a certain stiffness about her manner it was because she was (like her son, the King) shy. When first placed next to her at dinner I said to myself ‘Speak before you are spoken to’ (exactly the opposite to what nanny used to say) ‘otherwise you may never speak at all’. Queen Mary’s first responses were monosyllabic, but I talked on and was soon enjoying the warmth of her conversation. At the end of dinner she took a cigarette and puffed away at it gently, but contentedly.

Queen Mary was the most admirable of all the old ladies I have met. I was moved by her dignity, the straightness of her carriage, her flawless porcelain complexion, her majesty and her touching simplicity. One evening, after dinner, the party warmed up and people began to dance. Queen Mary, now in her 8o’s, did not hesitate. I found my arm linked with hers as we danced round, singing the Hokey Cokey:

The King’s younger brother, the Duke of Gloucester and the Duchess – Uncle Harry and Aunt Alice – were always there with their boys, the Princes William and Richard. The Duke was of a different stamp to his brother. Gourmand and more carefree about what he ate and drank, he cut a substantial figure compared with the King’s lean silhouette. ‘Uncle Harry’ was a jovial type, reacting instantly to the most faintly funny remark with a gusty, high-pitched giggle.
