Chapter 2 0

Hummingbirds attacked each other with buzz dives, feather-seeking missiles trying to gain domain over the blood red sugar water contained in the feeder. Henberlin, up since sunrise drinking coffee on the patio, immersed himself in the action for the last hour. From time to time, the brave little birds checked out his human figure sitting close to their prize. They took turns hovering a few feet from Henberlin’s face, a few quick position shifts up or down, a head turn or two checking their perimeter, their wings a beating blur. The curious bird currently monitoring him and the surrounding sky expected a rival to launch a head-on dive bomb attack any second in a mission to acquire some of the sweet liquid. A flank attack came out of nowhere and both birds blasted off in a chase, around and through the leaves of an olive tree, over the row of bougainvillea, then disappearing behind the tennis courts. Again and again the persistent mini avian battlers returned. Never giving up, always wanting complete control of the food source.

The welcome diversion ended as Leyna slid the patio door open. He wished Leyna would sleep longer; she needed the rest. They both knew early morning was the best time to sit outside during July in Arizona. To make the best use of their time during the trip meant getting up early. If he rose first, being alone allowed him to get his thoughts in order. Fleeing Calgary may not have been the best plan but, it’s what he came up with in the short time he had to find a way to protect his wife. Time to think didn’t exist back home right now, and it wasn’t until the drive from Los Angeles, Leyna asleep beside him, that he tried to appraise their predicament.

A few realities set off sirens he wondered if he could handle. The first reality being that it seemed they were on the run, trying to get away with murder. Once they were safe, away from Canadian law enforcement, he thought of setting Leyna up where no one could find her. Then he’d go back to Calgary to straighten out the situation. What could the best outcome of a murder be? For the murderer: Never getting caught. For the victim’s family: The murderer paying a heavy price for committing the crime. For society: Fair application of the law. For the victim: Justice.

The second reality that set off sirens was the fact he was obstructing justice. What was that going to cost him? How much was he willing to pay?

The detectives would soon commit to Leyna being the number-one suspect. He had to make sure they thought he still didn’t know and never did. A spouse always wants to believe in their counterpart’s innocence. He had to convince them he couldn’t bring himself to believe she could do such a thing. Not a real stretch, he had to admit. He still couldn’t believe it was true.

“It scared me when I woke up and couldn’t find you inside.
