Ranulf’s eyes were nearly white with his rage. His cheeks puffed red. He raised his sword with both hands, as if he were preparing to strike the head from a horse.

Lilias retreated from the hearth, falling back before the impending violence. She averted her face and rushed to the rear of the hall.

Alasdair needed a sword but instead held only a silver crucifix. Despite his faith in God, the cross was too light in his grip for him to feel safe. The heat of the fire caressed his right cheek as he slid closer toward the hearth’s edge.

“Your father blamed me for his ill-luck,” Ranulf said, holding his sword overhead. His naked torso heaved with his labored breathing. Sweat coursed down his chest, matting the white hair to his skin.

“Uncle Ranulf, whatever passed between you and my father is over now. My father is dead.” Alasdair again brandished the cross. Ranulf continued to stare at him, though appeared to see nothing at all.

From behind Ranulf, Dermid laughed.

“The day my sister wed your father, your father looked down on me. And when you fled me, I looked a fool before my clan and chief. Your father blamed me for what you did.”

Calum had finally found his voice. “Uncle, put the sword away, won’t you. We’re your only kinsmen now. Let us treat each other as such.”

Ranulf roared. He pointed the sword at Calum.

“And my other sister married low, and cursed me with you and your fool brother. You are no son of greatness.”

Dermid stepped forward into the wavering yellow light of the hearth. He now also carried a drawn sword. The reflected flames ran along its length as if it were a hell-forged blade.

“This was a trap from the first,” Calum said, his voice dry. “He means to murder us by his own hand.”

Alasdair agreed. Uncle Ranulf was so far in Lilias’s grip that he would never see reason. A priest would have to relieve him of the curses binding his reason. Yet as long as Lilias lived, such a fate could never be.

As long as Dermid and Red-Nose opposed them, Lilias would never be caught.

“I don’t know what you are,” Ranulf shouted. “I do not own you as kinsmen. Both of you left, and neither are welcomed back!”

Hearing the shift of feet over the earthen floor behind him, Alasdair wasted no time.

He sprang for the iron poker resting beneath the burning logs of the hearth. Stepping onto the hot stones, he slammed his booted foot down and sent flaming wood spinning into the air.

“Behind us!” he shouted at Calum, but he had thrown his hands over his face like everyone else.

The shower of flaming debris landed everywhere. Ranulf screamed and slashed impotently at the sparks flying over him. His wild slashes kept Dermid from rushing closer, as he was still behind Ranulf.

Lilias shrieked like a frightened child and collapsed into shadows.

Alasdair had no time to consider more. He whirled about and faced Red-Nose who held his sword low. The flames had not touched him, but the explosion of violence and fire left him dumbfounded.
