Chapter 9

Perhaps the Norns took pity on us after our difficult beginning for the wind veered a little and we did not need to row for a whole day. We laid up off Corn Walum as Erik and Aiden were loath to risk the Syllingar Insula at night. Nor did we wish to risk the land. Although we had defeated and cowed the men of Corn Walum there was little to be gained from any combat with them. They had little treasure and the weapons were only fit to be melted down for plough shares and hoes.

Every oar was manned as we negotiated the treacherous rocks and islands that marked the edge of the land the Romans had called Britannia. I do not think that Ragnar and Gruffyd truly understood the apprehension and fear in my men’s hearts as we rowed south and east. Even Einar and the hearth-weru were surprised at the silence of the Ulfheonar. There were no songs and no banter. It was not until we were in open water that they sang again.

The dragon sails from west to east

They look for men on which to feast

With Leather Neck and old One Eye

They row and make the dragon fly

Ulfheonar never forget

Ulfheonar never forgive

Ulfheonar fight to the death

No stronghold’s walls can keep them out

They fear no warrior nor sentry’s shout

They walk unseen in strange new lands

They fight and kill all warrior bands

Ulfheonar never forget

Ulfheonar never forgive

Ulfheonar fight to the death

Ulfheonar never forget

Ulfheonar never forgive

Ulfheonar fight to the death

It was a song Haaken had written for just such an occasion. When Erik shouted, “Oars in!” there were smiles once more.

I saw Ragnar talking to his hearth-weru. Then he walked to me, “Grandfather why were the Ulfheonar afraid of those islands?”

It was Erik Short Toe who answered, “There is a witch lives on those islands. We have often been becalmed or half wrecked on her island. It happens when she wishes to speak with Aiden or your grandfather.”

Haaken said, “And once Hrolf, the Frankish slave.”

“Aye. I had forgotten him. And no matter how fierce the storm we have little damage but that does not make us happy for the Jarl descends into the bowels of the earth. Sometimes he and Aiden disappear for a whole day and night. We never know if they will return.”

“We always return!”

“You are a wizard and you are comfortable in the company of such witches. We would all prefer that the witch ignore us and do as she has done this day and let us by.”

Aiden looked astern, “And I am always sad when she does not speak with us for each time she does I have more knowledge and more power. Perhaps she will call us on our return.”

Erik and the Ulfheonar each grabbed their tokens to ward off evil, “Aiden do not speak thus! You may not fear her but we do. Do not risk her wrath.”

Aiden laughed. “The hammers and wolves around your necks will not stop the witch if she wishes to speak with us.
