VIKING RETRIBUTION by Jeremy Laing

CHAPTER NINETEEN

The boy worked slowly, carefully, trying to make as little noise as possible. Having already removed the loose straw from the space between the edge of the loft and the thatch of the roof, he was now trying to loosen the pegs which held the fine netting his grandfather had placed all around the sleeping loft to keep out midges and mosquitoes whilst allowing air to circulate during the heat of summer.

Since most homesteaders with lofts couldn’t produce netting fine enough to keep the insects out, they stuffed straw into the space below the thatch. Ivar’s grandfather, however, had discovered many years before that linen flax formed netting sufficiently fine to do the job. With straw loosely scattered upon it, his netting could keep out most of the sleep disturbing pests without blocking the air needed in the confined space.

Grandfather did the job too well, thought young Ivar. Just can’t break these fine threads. And these pegs are even harder to work loose. “There’s one!” he exclaimed triumphantly as the first peg came away. Ivar’s aunt had been working away at another peg, but gave up.

“You are doing much better than I,” she whispered. “You carry on whilst I keep watch. Quietly now.”

She placed herself where she could attempt to create a diversion should the guard below decide that any small noises he heard were more than natural movement and the crackling of the thatch in the heat of the day.

She had been reluctant to sanction young Ivar’s plan, but in the end he had convinced her his plan was their best hope. “Once I get the pegs out,” the boy had whispered, “I can slip right through and slide down the wall to the ground — it isn’t very high, and there are plenty of hand and foot holds. I can do it easily, without making any noise. Before anyone knows I’m gone, I can run hard and ask the neighbour for help.”

Ivar’s great aunt threw up her hands. “All right, we can try,” she said. “Get the pegs out if you can. Work very quietly now.”

The aunt realized that the plan might indeed be possible — that the boy would not be missed, since the bits of food and drink they’d had had been passed up to her.

She had only just returned the bowls and spoons to the man who had prepared the early meal, such as it was, and did not expect to hear anything more from below until the night meal.

Huit and her brother would be watched carefully and could do nothing effective.

Young Ivar would be safe enough in the daylight, and might well bring rescue before those below even realized he had gone.

An inadvertent cry of triumph came from young Ivar as he loosed the last peg sufficient to allow himself passage through the netting.

“What’s going on up there?” demanded the guard from below. “The boy cried out in sleep,” shouted the aunt.

“Keep him quiet!” the guard insisted.

Neither Ivar nor his aunt dared breath
