Ultimately, Brand-Yngar and Asny returned to the three dwarves’ knothole, with Fjalar barely existent. Uxi first noticed them struggling to scale the tree trunk without jolting or dropping the dwarf hero, and excitedly alerted Blaengir and Brynrik to the fact. Uxi and Brynrik peered out of their opening into the twilight, taking up most of the space at the mouth of the entrance tunnel and evincing shock at Fjalar’s condition, but Blaengir forcibly parted his way between them and gazed down at the three figures. Without offering assistance, he sneered “Is this how you treat our champion? He looks half dead!”

“Then he must be improving,” replied Brand-Yngar, trying to secure a foothold on the thick bark, “because he’s looked closer to three-fourths dead. Do you think you could take time away from your spectating to help us?”

Brynrik and Uxi cringed at the prospect of venturing outside their wooden cave while there still was some luminescence outside, but Blaengir shoved each from behind, sending both tumbling down the decline. Blaengir himself zipped back into the shelter; with the hands of the other two dvergar added to his, Brand-Yngar finally managed to hoist Fjalar to the level of the knothole. Asny again stayed behind, but whispered advice to Brand-Yngar before he made his own ascent and then groped his way inside.

Ultimately, Brand-Yngar and Asny returned to the three dwarves’ knothole, with Fjalar barely existent.

Brynrik and Uxi carted Fjalar into the cavity that served as a smithy; Brand-Yngar followed closely. “His wound must be festering,” he warned them, “and he’s barely breathing.” Directing his statement chiefly at idling Blaengir, he remarked “You have power to cure him; how strongly must I urge you?”

Blaengir hasted into another room, but then seemed to stay there longer than he had during Brand-Yngar’s first visit. Uxi and Brynrik creased their brows to a still-greater degree than was ordinary, so deep was their worry over Fjalar; Blaengir protruded his head from the pitchy darkness and called to them “Bring him in here.”

The subordinate black elves did as he had bidden them. After a long while, Blaengir stormed into the forge room where Brand-Yngar awaited the outcome. Uxi and Brynrik were with Blaengir, but looked sad rather than angry.

“Fjalar has died,” he snapped. “You have failed in your quest. You’ll get nothing more from us; in fact, I must insist that you hand over that helmet I’ve already given you.”

Brand-Yngar felt great consternation at what had taken place, and bowed his head in sorrow. When Blaengir tried to snatch away the lowered helm, however, he refused to allow the dwarf to lay his hands upon it. “You charged me with getting Fjalar out of Helheim, and that I did; he was outside Helgrind when Garm inflicted the mortal wound. Besides, had you acted decisively, you might yet have saved him.”

Blaengir was incensed. A rod lay with one white-hot end in the forge; he palmed the opposite extremity and thrust the searing metal toward the face of Brand-Yngar, who ducked under it. The improvised weapon clanged off his elfin helmet, whereupon Brand-Yngar adeptly unsheathed his sword and plunged it into the chest of Blaengir, who quickly died.
