Ringelblum Archive I:1228

Translated from the Yiddish by Robert Wolf

PERETZ OPOCZYNSKI, born in Lutomiersk, near Łódź, in 1895, was given a yeshiva education far away from home, which precipitated a break with his Hasidic upbringing. His earliest literary efforts were poems, but he turned to prose to describe his experiences in World War I as a prisoner of war in Hungary. A shoemaker by profession, he also worked as a Yiddish journalist, first in Łódź and then, as of 1935, in Warsaw, where he worked for a Right Labor Zionist newspaper. In the ghetto, he wrote prolifically for the Oyneg Shabes archive and also became an activist in his house committee at 21 Wołynska. Opoczynski was most likely rounded up in the deportation of January 1943.
