For the next couple of months they worked like a dispirited, headless organisation. It was as if NumeroSoft had reached the end of its journey. It also affected their domestic business, which when neglected, began to decay as well. All of them felt betrayed and no amount of counselling helped.

‘I think we should close shop and go our own way,’ said Motu while they were discussing the future of their company.

‘Yes, it is a tough job running your own business. I feel we are not really cut out for this,’ Pankaj added.

‘We have a lesson to learn from this. We should never pin all our hopes on one dream,’ Priya said.

‘But isn’t it premature to declare ourselves dead? We are still in our twenties and have a long way to go,’ Motu interjected when the blabber refused to subside.

‘Not together,’ Pankaj said.

During the discussion they decided to give themselves one more month to see if they had the courage to keep on working with the laalas for the rest of their lives.

But no miracle happened in that one-month period. Meanwhile, they had let it be known to all the employees of NumeroSoft that they should start looking for new jobs.

They felt extremely disturbed because they knew that they would be able to run their own lives well, maybe not as successfully as their peers but still well enough for them to have a comfortable life. But the other employees would find it difficult to survive. What particularly moved them was the helplessness of the office boy who fed a large family of eight with his solitary income and Nitin, who thought they were his family.

‘I’d rather die than go back to Kolhapur. Please don’t shut this office. Winning is not always important. We are able to sleep in peace and have fun together in the evenings. So how does it matter even if we are not the best in the world,’ he pleaded.

For the first time in their lives, Motu and Pankaj understood what it meant to live with the weight of other people’s expectations.

The morning saw sad eyes everywhere in the office; some probably had shed tears already. Like all the others Motu had also come to say a final goodbye but on seeing the gloomy faces of everyone he felt compelled to change his mind.

‘We can’t close the office like this. We know that together we have the capability of changing the course of a thousand lives. Perseverance increases the probability of success immensely. All we need is a good break. Let’s work hard. The right opportunity will definitely come,’ Motu took centrestage.

Nobody was convinced; the pall of gloom was too thick to let them look beyond the present.

‘Do you remember, Pankaj, I would have never cleared JEE if I had not believed in myself? Because I wanted to do it, it happened and you became my vehicle to IIT. You would never have been able to get the coveted red degree in your university if you had not believed you could do it.
